Tony Scherr Trio [Top Live Show]
A versatile local singer and guitarist shows fresh licks
in a new weekly hang.
The trouble with locals who play steady residencies is
that regularity can be equated with predictability. But
anyone who saw Anton Fier's resurrected Golden Palominos
at (Le) Poisson Rouge or the Living Room last month
noticed that Tony Scherr is suddenly up on a whole new
level. Scherr, still best known for his bass work with
Sex Mob and Bill Frisell, sings and plays guitar in his
own trio, with Fier on drums and Rob Jost on bass. The
unit was broken in and seasoned during an 18-month stint
at the Jalopy Theatre. (Those same qualities also
describe the sound of Scherr's singing voice.)
If you caught Scherr at the Jalopy - or at least read the
glowing reviews - you could still be floored by the
blazing slide-guitar leads he pumped into those
Palominos sets. If you didn't, now's the time to get
acquainted, as Scherr's trio begins a run of six shows
in seven weeks at the Living Room.
